Mrs. Showalter Bio
This is my fifth year at Plato Academy! I am enjoying the atmosphere and the learning that happens everyday in class.
I attended school at Ball State University in Indiana. I obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Deaf Education in 2001. I also completed a program through Indiana Wesleyan University to be certified for Learning Disabilities in 2008. I taught for 3 years with high school ESE students in Indiana. I taught 3rd grade for 5 years in Hillsborough County before moving to St. Petersburg.
I have several interests outside of the classroom that include many science and math fields. I love to read about discoveries in Earth/Space science. I love watching for meteor showers, searching for comets, and following explorations of the solar system and beyond. My favorite place to visit is Kennedy Space Center which I look forward to visiting again soon! In addition to space, I am fascinated with meteorology: following tropical weather, learning about weather patterns, etc. My favorite color is blue. I collect things with penguins, and now thanks to my daughter, ladybugs. I enjoy coffee, dark chocolate, and buying school supplies!
I currently hold a valid teaching certificate in the state of Florida for Elementary Education. However, according to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, I do not meet 'highly qualified' standards in Florida based on not having taken the Florida content knowledge exam. I received my initial teacher certification from the state of Indiana, which is where I took my content knowledge exam. I have taught in the state of Florida since 2011 and I feel that I am more than qualified for the position I currently hold.
Thank you,
Mrs. Showalter
